PRESS RELEASE ON TYPHOON DAN ON 5 OCTOBER 1999 ISSUED BY THE
HONG
KONG OBSERVATORY AT 10:30 P.M.

TYPHOON DAN ENTERED THE SOUTH CHINA SEA THIS EVENING (5
OCTOBER 1999) AND CAME WITHIN 800 KILOMETRES OF HONG
KONG. THE STAND BY SIGNAL NO. 1 WAS HOISTED AT 8:45 P.M.
DAN IS A MATURE TYPHOON WITH MAXIMUM WINDS OF 140
KILOMETRES PER HOUR NEAR ITS CENTRE. DAN IS ALSO LIKELY
TO INTENSIFY FURTHER AFTER IT HAS ENTERED INTO THE SOUTH
CHINA SEA. ON ITS FORECAST TRACK, DAN MAY COME RATHER
CLOSE TO HONG KONG LATER THIS WEEK.
THE OBSERVATORY REMINDS THE PUBLIC TO BE ON THE ALERT
AS CHANGES IN WEATHER MAY AFFECT THEIR PLAN.
THE HOISTING OF TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING SIGNALS IN
OCTOBER IS NOT A RARE EVENT. THE STAND BY SIGNAL NO.1
AND THE STRONG WIND SIGNAL NO.3 WERE HOISTED FOR TYPHOON
ZEB AND BABS RESPECTIVELY IN OCTOBER LAST YEAR. THE LAST
TIME THE GALE OR STORM SIGNAL NO.8, WAS HOISTED IN
OCTOBER WAS FOR TYPHOON SIBYL IN 1995.
1999 IS ONE OF THE BUSIEST YEARS IN TERMS OF TROPICAL
CYCLONE ACTIVITY. IT WAS THE FIRST TIME SINCE 1964 THAT
NO. 8 OR HIGHER SIGNALS WERE HOISTED ON FIVE DIFFERENT
OCCASIONS. ALSO, THE HURRICANE NO. 10 WAS HOISTED FOR
THE FIRST TIME SINCE 1983. FURTHERMORE, FOUR TROPICAL
CYCLONES HAVE ALREADY CROSSED HONG KONG IN 1999, A FIRST
IN THE LAST HALF CENTURY.
